How To Prevent Ingrown Hairs

Whenever you read about the downside of shaving you will always find the warning that it can cause ingrown hairs.

Yet shaving is still the most practical way of removing unwanted hair.

There are other methods of course, but they are more expensive, take longer and some of them mean you need to have a higher pain threshold.

If you do things right you should not have any problems or side effects like rashes or ingrown hairs.

So, this begs the question, how can you avoid ingrown hairs?

First of all, an ingrown hair is one that is caught below the skin, one that was unable to burst out, so to speak, and continues growing (that is what hair does, grow.)

It is common to have ingrown hairs or hair bumps, especially in warm seasons when we tend to shave more often.

This can be the legs, the bikini zones, or wherever.

They can be not only annoying, but unattractive and actually hurt.

You can get ingrown hairs, not only from shaving but also from plucking and waxing, as this happens when the hair starts to regrow. This means that ingrown facial hair, ingrown underarm hair, ingrown leg hair and even ingrown pubic hair is quite normal.

But the hairs that grow beneath the skin can turn into pimples with pus or scabs as we try to pull or rip them out and we injure ourselves. Thisis why we have to take some basic precautions before, during and after we shave so we do not have to deal with this problem a few days later.

  • To prevent ingrown hairs, the first thing to do is exfoliate your skin so as to open the pores. To do this you can use an exfoliating sponge and just remember to do this before actually shaving.
  • Plan your shaving so that you do it after leaving the shower or tub because the water helps to soften the hair and make it more manageable. Prepare your skin with the exfoliation and as you wet it you are ensuring an easier shave with better results.
  • Since most ingrown hairs occur when the skin is tight, do not stretch the skin on your arms or legs as you pass the razor.
  • Finally, shave the hair with strokes that go in the same direction as the hair growth; in other words if the hair grow in a downward direction, pass the razor in a downward direction, and vice-versa.

After shaving it is always a good idea to take care of your skin, and one of the best ways of doing this is with baby oil, as this helps to keep it soft and healthier (you also reduce rashes and skin irritation).
