Hair Grows in Different Body Areas

Hair grows all over our bodies, except for a few areas, such as our lips, palms of our hands and soles of our feet.

When we reach puberty we also start growing a different type of hair. Men, due to the androgen hormones, grow more of this type of hair in more places, but women do start growing this hair, but to a lesser extent.

Now, there are basically three types of hair, and by the way only mammals have hair.

These are:

  • Lanugo, which grows on the body, is present in feotuses and is usually shed early on. Its main function is to insulte the skin due to lack of fat. Many anorexia sufferers develop lanugo.
  • Vellus, being the short fin body hair that grows on our bodies, on both sexes.
  • Terminal hair, being the subject of hair removal. It is the longer, stronger hair that grows in certain areas of our bodies, such as scalp, face, eyebrows, under arm, pubic area. It can also grow on chest, legs, back, etc.

By Body Area:

he growth of terminal hair in areas of our bodies aside from scalp, eybrows and eye lashes, generally begins with puberty in both men and women.  Men tend to have more terminal hair on their bodies due to the develpment of androgen hotmones (testosterone, for example); however both men and women have the same capacity for hair growth.

The body areas from which we remove hair are:

  •

  • Face (facial hair).  And the typical hair removal method is shaving (both electrical or with razors).  For women, additional methods would be plucking (including tweezing), chemical depilatories or for longer term hair reduction, laser and electrolysis.
  •

  • Chest.  For women, generally it will be plucking or a depilatory for coarse hair that may grow round the nipples.  This is quite common.
  •

  • Under Arm.  The most common practice is shaving, followed by waxing. Shaving can cause skin irritation so it is also a question of being careful.  With regards to waxing, I can't deal with the pain, but having said that, it works just fine for many women.  If tempted to go with chemical depilatories, try it out in a small area as it can cause burns - the under arm area is very sensitive.
  •

  • Abdominal Area. Some women do have hair growth creeping up from the loins. The alternatives are wider, where any of the methods, shaving, waxing, depilatory creams, lasering, electrolysis, can do very well.  Home hair removal would go with the first three, professional application would be with lasering and electrolysisi.
  •

  • Pubic. This will be either partial or total. Shaving, waxing (including brazilian waxing or biikini line).

As you can see there are many types of hair removal product.

Your decision should take into account, how often - shaving cuts the hair, waxing plucks it, and therefore the hair regrowth takes long. Whether you will do it yourself or go professionally.  Costs are important, where professional service will always have higher cost.
