Shaving For Women

Shaving, if not the oldest hair removal method (that belongs to plucking), is certainly the most widely used form of hair removal.

In simple terms shaving refers to the act of cutting, by means of a sharp blade or sharp object, hair at skin surface.

The word shaving is usually associated with hair removal from men's faces, but it is also widely used by women, and to a large extent for legs and under arms.

There are a few myths surrounding shaving, one which states that shaving provokes hair growth, and even coarser hair. This is untrue. Our genes define the amount hair (terminal or vellus) we will have. This can be affected by illness or hormone tratments, etc., but not by shaving.

What does happen is that the hair is cut at an angle, and therefore the point is sharper when it comes out, while natural growth would leave a tapered end.

Shaving Guide

There are two types of shaving products as such. Manual razors and electrical razors.

Manual or wet shave, which includes straight razors (and apart from barbers, rarely used), and safety razors.

Electric shavers, which must be practiced over dry skin.

Both these methods are widely practiced, both by men and by women. The products offered today are marketed by gender, though men's shaving articles are usually cheaper and equally good. There is a first tip for the cost conscious,

The Wet Shave

1. Moisten the area to be shaved with warm or hot water. This allows the hair to be soften and expand slightly. a good idea is to soak a face towel in hot water and apply it against the area to be shaved.

2. Apply lather. This can be found as cream, as gel or shaving soap.

3. Shave carefully in the direction of the hair growth. It is not a race and impatience can result in cuts, razor burn or skin irritation.

4. Rinse the blade continuosly

5. Once shaving is over, rinse the area removing excess lather, with cold water. If you used a face towel to soften the hair, it should now be cold and it is very practical both to clean up and to close the skin pores.

6. Most skin irritation problems happen because loss of moisture, so a moisturizing cream is a very good idea prior to other alcohol based aftershave.

The Electric Shave

1. The main thing is that you must not dampen the skin. An electric shave must be over dry skin

2. Do not try and speed up the process as this usually results in a slight skin burn due to irritation

3. Some people with curly hair have reported an increase in ingrown hair, although it is generally thought that with an electric shave these types of problems are reduced.

4. The end result is good, although an electric shave does not give such a close chave, and therefore the smooth skin look and feel is of shorter duration.

5. There are many electric shave options for women, but in the final analysis, there is not much difference.

6. Read and follow the instructions.

Shaving is preferred by many people due to the costs involved as well as the speed of the results. For travel purposes it is not only handy, but easily replenished.
