Shaving For Women And Depilatory Creams

Shaving is a hair removal process that removes hair from above the skin.  It is used by both men and women though the areas tend to be different. Shaving for women will usually be for the legs, maybe under the arms, and shaving pubic hair.

Shaving For Women

Shaving is the art of removing hair from above the skin - without damaging the skin.

Tips for a better shave

1. Take a bath before shaving.

While female hair is thinner than that of men, it can still be as strong as a wire. Soaking in a tub of hot water or taking a shower for two or three minutes softens the hair, making shaving so much. Either way, keep in mind that after 15 or 20 minutes of being exposed to water, the skin may begin to wrinkle, hampering a good shave.

2. Apply plenty of moisturizer.

After washing the legs and underarms to remove the natural oils and perspiration, apply a moisturizer that is not made out of soap. This will keep your hair moisturized and allow the blade to glide smoothly over the skin. Do not rely on the soap to moisturize your skin as it does not retain moisture like gel, and may clog your razor. On top of that many soaps cause skin dryness.

3. Choose the right razor.

It is important to choose a quality razor that will not hurt the skin. A good choice is to find one over the counter that is specifically made for women, with an ergonomic handle and a lubricating strip with aloe and other moisturizers. All these elements together will give you excellent control and a super smooth shave.

4. Shave with a clean blade.

Using new razor blades guarantees a shave that is precise, gentle and comfortable. It also reduces possible cuts and irritation. At the first sign of any type of discomfort, you should replace the blades.

5. Do not press too much.

Make gentle movements and with little pressure. Also, if you shave the bikini area or other sensitive areas, do not forget to apply enough moisturizer.

6. Leave the most difficult shaving areas last.

It is usually difficult to shave the back of the knees and thighs, and areas like the ankles, where the bones are very close to the skin. To make your shaving session easier leave these areas till the end, as in the meantime the hair located in those places will be soaking, and therefore softening up, for a longer time. They will then be easier to cut.

7. Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize.

The key to preventing dryness and flaking of the skin is moisture. After the shave, apply a moisturizer without alcohol.

Depilatory Creams, Gels and More

When searching for depilatory hair removal products you are talking about depilatory creams, gels or lotions are applied over the area where hair is to be removed.

But there are two terms that can create confusion. Depilatory or depilatories and depilation.

Depilation relates to the removal of hair above the surface of the skin. The most obvious method is by shaving, be it with a traditional razor or with an electric razor. Aside from plucking, this is probably the oldest method around.

The term depilatories or depilatory hair removal products is used for lotions, creams and gels, that contain a mix of chemicals that weaken the hair (above the skin) so that it can easily be wiped off. The chemicals used are calcium hydroxide, and sodium or calcium thioglycolate. These creams or lotions are easily found over the counter.

As people have different types of skins and therefore different skin sensibilities, you should always try out the depilatory in a small area, as some people can have allergic reactions or rashes coming out.

Depilatory Hair Removal Notes

As depilatories remove the hair from above the skin (from the surface), the hair regrowth will take place within days.

As mentioned above, depilatories can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. As hair and skin have similar properties, the chemicals that destroy the hair, can also affect the skin. You should always apply a small amount over a small area before going full speed ahead.

When using a depilatory, first apply warm water over the area so that the hair is softened. This by the way is also a very good idea if shaving with a razor.

If no reaction has set in, apply a thick layer of the depilatory over the skin, and let it rest there for three to fifteen minutes according to the instructions. More is not necessarily better.

Wipe with a face towel or a small cloth, with firm strokes.

Never use depilatory creams near or over sensitive areas (eyebrows or near the eyes). And never apply over broken skin, eczema, rashes, sun burnt or any sort of sore or sensitive skin.
